Azuki is still a very early stage startup, so career opportunities are pretty limited. Below is a list of all currently active job openings.


Chapter Splitter/QCer (Freelance)

Chapter splitters will split volumes of manga into individual chapters on the Azuki content management system (CMS), as well as perform quality control on split chapters.

This is a contractor position at a small, fast-moving startup that is paid on a monthly basis.

Responsibilities:

  • Split volumes of manga into individual chapters within the Azuki CMS
  • Perform quality control checks on split chapters within the Azuki CMS, communicating any issues found in uploaded chapters (ex. Missing pages, broken images)
  • Identify and flag double-spread pages within manga chapters
  • NOTE: this is not an editorial role, so you will not be asked to assess content in any way (ex. spelling, grammar, typesetting, style guide adherence)

Required skills and experience:

  • Extremely meticulous and detail-oriented
  • Great at meeting deadlines
  • Good written communication skills
  • Avid reader of manga that is familiar with manga page layout conventions

Preferred skills and experience:

  • Prior experience processing content for publishing/entertainment companies
  • Prior experience working with content management systems

Prospective Manga Reader (Freelance)

Prospective Manga Readers assist the Licensing Director in assessing new manga for Azuki to license, by reading series in Japanese and providing short evaluations of each one. This is a part-time contract position, paid based on the number of evaluations turned in by the contractor. You will work directly under the Licensing Director.

Responsibilities:

  • Read Japanese-language manga and other content, with files provided by Azuki
  • Analyze content and form an opinion based on its storytelling, artwork, and potential popularity among various manga reader demographics
  • Compare content with other similar media and come up with lists of comparable stories
  • Write up answers to questions about the content provided by Azuki and return them promptly after reading
  • Respond to any follow-up questions from the Azuki team

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Strong Japanese reading skills: JLPT 1, 2, or equivalent experience
  • Knowledgeable about manga, with significant experience reading a variety of series
  • Strong reading comprehension and media analysis skills
  • Ability to clearly communicate in written English

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • Keeps abreast of changes in the manga industry and community, including sales numbers and cultural trends
  • Experience translating Japanese text to English, especially manga translation
  • Knowledge of Japanese culture
  • Experience with non-manga pop culture, including but not limited to anime, movies, TV, and comics from outside Japan

Licensing Coordinator (Freelance)

The Licensing Coordinator will assist the Licensing Director to grow Azuki‘s catalog through discovering new manga to license and building relationships with publishers.

This is a part-time contract position, with a potential for promotion to full-time work in the future. Azuki is a fast-moving startup environment, and ideal candidates will be able to operate independently to creatively solve problems. You will work directly under the Licensing Director.

Responsibilities:

  • Meet with publishers and creators in Japan to present information about Azuki
  • Assist Azuki team with publisher relations, including interpreting during meetings and writing/translating emails
  • Suggest and evaluate new manga titles to publish, based on strategic direction from Licensing Director
  • Advise members of the Azuki team during contract negotiations and strategic planning

Required Skills & Experience:

  • JLPT 1, 2, or equivalent experience
  • Proficient in business Japanese
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in Japanese and English
  • Competent at translation and interpretation both to/from Japanese and English
  • Strong knowledge of manga as an art form and cultural phenomenon

Preferred Skills & Experience:

  • Based in Japan
  • Familiarity with manga licensing contracts and rights management best practices
  • Existing relationships with Japanese manga publishers
  • Keeps abreast of changes in the manga industry and community, including sales numbers and cultural trends
  • Experience closing content licensing deals, especially in manga or other publishing industries
  • Avid reader of manga
